Woodchips are the product of tree chipping machines and they are a very economical choice for large or hidden areas where color and texture consistency are less important. Wood chips may also contain unground twigs and small sticks. Wood chips will weather to a grey color. These natural wood chips are an inexpensive way to keep weeds down in an area with trees or along the edge of a property. They add a very natural look to areas while helping to keep unwanted weeds and undergrowth to a minimum. Also great for pathways thru wooded, wet, or field areas. Over time they will improve the soil as they decompose, and they don’t need to be mulched over every year as with colored mulches.

Then determine the depth of the topsoil or mulch you feel is needed and find that number along the top of the chart. Where the two boxes intersect will be the approximate cubic yards of topsoil or mulch needed. Remember, when using the chart for topsoil or stone calculations; add 20% to the yardage recommended on the chart to account for compaction.
